Tai Chi for Arthritis

Fall Prevention

About Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention
Studies have shown Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention to be effective in relieving pain and improving health and balance. It is a safe and easy-to-learn program, recommended by the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), National Council on Aging (NCOA), and by Arthritis foundations and health departments all over the world.
Each class consists of gentle, slow movement and is done standing, with small steps forward, back, and sideways. Chair variations of movements are available.
Gentle, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) - friendly, for those ready to experiment with the practice.
Please register in advance and attend the whole session as we will add new movement each week.
Taking 16 hours of instruction over a period of weeks, accompanied by daily personal practice by participants is the recommended "dosage" for the program developed by Dr. Paul Lam of the Tai Chi for Health Institute. Ongoing practice after learning the movements will help maintain ongoing benefits.

These short practice sessions are for those who have studied the 12 movements. Please contact me if you are interested in a beginner class.

About the Class
For those who have studied the 12 movements, true beginners contact me about a beginner class. This "Short & Sweet" class consists of 40 minutes per week, which is a "do-able" amount of time for many people as each class lasts only 20 minutes. This translates to 24 weeks of attendance to meet the 16 hour dosage found effective in studies mentioned at the top of this page. Benefits may be felt after each class and can be expected to grow over time with consistent practice.
We will emphasize standing movement. Movement can be done seated as needed...variations will be shown. Be sure to do what feels best to you.

Zoom link will be emailed to you once you register.
Preparation for Class
Clear a safe space for your Tai Chi practice. Consider rugs, bags, cords, pets, furniture placement, and so forth. This is important when doing a class in-person and when participating via Zoom.
Have a chair, wall, or sturdy piece of furniture to help with balance, as needed.

Join My Experiment?
My intention is to continue offering these classes without requiring payment in hopes of including all who want to participate. Please be generous when you can pay and know that you are supporting me and others in the class. Thank-you.
Can't pay right now? No problem, but it is good that we have some sort of exchange to honor the value of my work and the community created by our classes. Here are two non-monetary options to contribute:
Please make a special effort to invite others to my classes. These classes are offered to help keep us all moving and building community as the pandemic evolves and resolves...and beyond.
Do good deeds in exchange for classes you take. Spread the spirit of kindness and generosity in ways that you can. Actively be kind to others. No gesture of kindness is too small...holding a door open or smiling works wonders. Create positive ways to connect with others - take a walk, play music, sing, tell stories and jokes, dance, garden, make something for someone, teach someone to read or write, call a friend or family member, be politically active, and advocate - for the environment, for individuals, for societal issues you care about.
